Dr. Philip Augustine, MD DM, stands as a pioneering figure in the field of Gastroenterology, renowned for his transformative contributions and visionary leadership. With a distinguished career spanning decades, Dr. Augustine has garnered numerous accolades, including the prestigious Padma Shri Award, in recognition of his outstanding achievements. He heads the most comprehensive Gastroenterology, Hepatology and advanced GI Endoscopy Centres in Kerala.

As an entrepreneur, he established the first private sector Gastroenterology unit in Kerala at Deva Matha Hospital, Koothattukulam (1983) and moved with his team to Kochi in 1992 and established the PVS Memorial Hospital, which was the best-known Gastroenterology Centre in Kerala at the time. He was the founder and chief promoter of the prestigious Lakeshore Hospital & Research Centre Ltd. commissioned in 2003, and successfully led this institution to national and international fame, till 2016. He then established Philip Augustine Associates Pvt. Ltd. a healthcare consultancy company which empowered several small and medium hospitals in and around Cochin by establishing GE Centres in them. In 2021, he moved with his team to the prestigious Rajagiri Hospital, Aluva to establish the Centre of Excellence in Gastrointestinal Sciences as a joint venture project with the hospital. This Centre is now the most comprehensive Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Advanced GI Endoscopy Centre in the State.

Nature of Work
  • Gastroenterologist of national and international repute. Pioneer in therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy in India
  • Started the first private sector Gastroenterology unit in Kerala at Deva Matha Hospital, Koothattukulam in 1983
  • Organised the best-known gastroenterology team in the country. Established the reputed Digestive Diseases Centre in PVS Memorial Hospital, Cochin in 1992. This centre was approved for postgraduate training in Gastroenterology by the National Board of Examinations till departure in 2003.
  • Organised the Deva Matha Medical Research Foundation which conducted a detailed epidemiological survey of diabetes and pancreatitis in Kerala
  • Founder and Managing Director of Lakeshore Hospital & Research Centre Ltd., Cochin, commissioned in January 2003, the most prestigious corporate hospital in Kerala. Also Managing Trustee of the Lakeshore Medical Research Foundation. This Foundation runs the Lakeshore Medical Library which caters to the staff of Lakeshore Hospital, especially postgraduates.
  • Established the Digestive Diseases Centre (Gastroenterology Department) at Lakeshore Hospital in 2003. This Centre, which has grown to be a centre for Postgraduate training in Gastroenterology (Dip NB), also imparts advanced therapeutic ERCP training to overseas Gastroenterologists including GE fellows from the USA. The Centre has the distinction to be the first to successfully perform living donor liver transplant in Kerala. This is one of the leading comprehensive centres of Gastroenterology in the country incorporating allied departments of Hepatology, GI Surgery, GI Radiology, GI Pathology, and GI Oncology.
  • Lakeshore Hospital attracted several overseas patients from countries from the Middle East, Africa, UK, Europe, and USA and was a part of Medical Tourism.
  • Chairman of the Healthcare Subcommittee of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Kerala State Council. In this capacity, organized two international Conferences & Exhibition “Kerala Health Tourism 2006 & 2007” in close liaison with the Government of Kerala through its Department of Tourism. These conferences have created greater awareness about the potential of “Medical Tourism” in Kerala and India at large.
  • Reported the occurrence of Recurrent Pyogenic Cholangitis (RPC, Oriental Cholangiopathy) for the first time in India in 1987.
  • Reported for the first time, the existence of “Crohn’s Disease” in India in 1995.
  • Chairman, Philip Augustine Associates Pvt. Ltd., a healthcare consultancy firm, established in 2016, which empowered small and medium hospitals in and around Kochi by establishing advanced GE centers in them. Currently running the Centre of Excellence in Gastrointestinal Sciences at Rajagiri Hospital, Aluva, as a joint venture initiative.
